Cialis is a pill used to primarily treat erectile dysfunction. However, the active substance tadalafil has lately been proved effective in treating more than ED issues such as pulmonary arterial hypertension. The tablets are basically yellow in colour having the shape of an almond. There are, however, a variety of types available for instance Cialis soft tabs and Female Cialis which are different in shape and sometimes colours. Cialis comes in 3 volumes being 5mg, 10mg and 20mg. The dosage is usually prescribed by a physician if one is not already a regular consumer of the medicine.

History of Cialis

Cialis was approved for sales in the end of December 2003, by Food and Drug Administration. It was at that time the third innovative drug developed to cure penile erective dysfunction, just after Viagra and Levitra. The drug was introduced 5 years after the first known pill, Viagra and has since then been sold in millions.

GlaxoSmithKline (at that time known as Glaxo Wellcome) and ICOS had formed a venture in 1991 to produce a new drug. The agreement between the two corporations was geared to analyze a substance called IC351. It is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. The compound IC351 passed its first test phase 1 in 1995. The phase 2 testing focused on finding out whether IC351 was a performing compound to treat erectile dysfunction as it proved successfully. The final phase (phase 3) was honored with FDA’s approval stating that the substance IC351 (tadalafil) successful alleviated penile erectile issues.

Proprietor of Cialis

The formal agreement that existed between ICOS and Glaxo stopped very soon afterward in 1996. Glaxo did not pursue the research and sales of the product. Glaxo considered that impotency drugs was a too radical diversification away from their core market. So they declined. ICOS Corporation was motivated to continue their research and subsequently formed a joint venture will Eli Lilly. This led to the formation of Lilly ICOS LCC Company in 1998. The company did successfully commercialize the active substance tadalafil under the brand Cialis. The original owner of the product Cialis is thus Lilly ICOS LCC Company. However, in 2007 Eli Lilly and Company took-over ICOS for a sum of 2.3 billion. The owner of Cialis is today Eli Lilly.

Competitive Analysis of Cialis

Cialis was proven to be better than its competitive brands Viagra and Levitra. Cialis maintained its effectiveness for a far longer time than other ED drugs. It was considered to last for an approximate of one and a half day, equivalent to 36 hours. Cialis is thus more than twice as effective compared to its counter parts Viagra and Levitra. This was empirically shown in the clinical tests performed before its launch in 2003.
